Jamyang Kyi

Jamyang Kyi (born 1965) is a prominent Tibetan singer, writer, journalist, television broadcaster, and a vocal feminist. Known for her outspoken advocacy of Tibetan women's rights and her critical writings on social issues, she has faced harassment and detention by Chinese authorities for her activism.

Career and Activism

  • Broadcaster and Journalist: Jamyang Kyi worked as a producer for the Tibetan-language section of the state-owned Qinghai TV in Xining.
  • Writer and Blogger: She is a popular writer and blogger among Tibetans, using her platform to discuss issues such as gender discrimination, rape, and the impact of social movements in Tibet.
  • Singer: She is a noted musician, with some of her music and information available on sites like I Love Tibet.
  • Human Rights Advocate: Kyi is a strong voice for human rights, particularly women's rights in Tibet. Her writings have been translated and published by various human rights organizations.

Detention and Persecution

In April 2008, Jamyang Kyi was detained by state security officers and accused of sending text messages to friends about the unrest in Tibet that year. During her detention, she was tortured. Following her release after paying a substantial fine, she wrote a detailed account of her experiences in a book titled A Sequence of Tortures: A Diary of Interrogations.
Since her release, she and her family have been under government surveillance and subjected to ongoing harassment. In 2017, several books authored by her and her husband were confiscated from bookstores by officials.
